Micromechanical Exfoliation

micromechanical exfoliation

Introduction

Micromechanical exfoliation method is to use a special adhesive tape to peel molybdenum disulfide powder, that means use adhesion of adhesive tape to overcome the Van der Waals' force between layers so as to achieve the purpose of peeling, further obatin unilamellar or multilamellar molybdenum disulfide nanosheet.

Frindt is the first one to use this method. In 1965, he successfully prepared dozens of thickness of MoS2 nanosheets. With the development of technology and the improvement of process technology, it has been possible to prepare the monolayer nanosheets or many layer of MoS2 by this method. In 2004, Novoselov used this method for graphite, MoS2 and other large pieces of sheet material, and successfully prepared a two-dimensional monolayer material. Two-dimensional material made by this method have similar crystal structure with exfoliated layered material, and it can be held for a certain period of time in the case of stable ambient.

Micromechanical peeling method is a more traditional method to prepare single two-dimensional material, and it is by far the most effective way to obtain pure, highly crystalline and a single atomic layer thickness of the layered nanomaterials. This preparation method is simple, and the degree of peeling is better, it has now become a mature technology. But the amount of layer of MoS2 prepared by this method is relatively difficult to control.
